Lesson Plans
Reflections...
Coming from a performing arts background, presenting in front of a class never intimidated me. However, being an instructor did and I wanted to make sure my lesson plan would allow me to feel as comfortable as possible when speaking to my students. I clearly remember preparing my first lesson plan last semester; I already had an idea of what I wanted to present on because I was interested in doing the lesson plan for Sea Wall, an 18 page monologue which runs about 25 minutes on stage. For my first lesson plan, I knew I needed the video of a recorded performance of this monologue as well as a few tips from my instructor beforehand. I wanted to start with a brainstorming session about premise to get the class's brains flowing, and then show them the video to reinforce the idea they discussed and discovered in the beginning. I was not trying to depart from my professor's style because I enjoyed when it was presented to me in this way; however, I did want to put my own twist on it using my own language because I felt it could be more relatable. The students did not need to read the script before watching because our class is called "Writing to Be Seen". From the 388V readings, I found most helpful the one about paradigm shift which showed me that teaching in America has now shifted focusing on the student's perspective.
